Elliot Lake Secondary School (ELSS) is located on 303 Mississauga Avenue in Elliot Lake, Ontario.  The school began in 1956 with 23 students and grew to 1193 students by 1990. The following year, the school saw an enrolment of 899 students and the institution's population would settle at around 500 students. The student athletics are known as the Atoms.

The school was built in four phases during the years 1957, 1959, 1964 and 1968. The building consists of 27 classrooms, five science labs, three technology shops, one manufacturing shop, one double gymnasium with a folding wall, one library, one family studies room, one music room, a drama room, five computer labs and a cafeteria.
Students who participate in the school's widely-acclaimed Travel and Tourism class get the opportunity to travel overseas for experiences in places such as Greece, Italy, Scandinavia and China.

As per tradition, each Friday the Principal gives out treats to each student.  The school holds a draw in which one staff member and one classroom is selected for a weekly prize, and everyone in the school receives a birthday cupcake.

The school newspaper is titled "The Spirit".
