Elliot
Lake Secondary School (ELSS) is
located on 303 Mississauga Avenue in
Elliot Lake, Ontario. The
school began in 1956 with 23
students and grew to 1193
students by 1990. The following
year, the school saw an
enrolment of 899 students and the
institution's population would
settle at around 500 students. The
student athletics are
known as the Atoms.The school was
built in four phases during the
years 1957, 1959, 1964 and 1968. The
building consists of 27 classrooms,
five science labs, three technology
shops, one manufacturing shop, one
double gymnasium with a folding
wall, one library, one family
studies room, one music room, a
drama room, five computer labs and a cafeteria.
Students who participate in the school's widely-acclaimed
Travel and Tourism class get the opportunity to travel overseas for
experiences in places such as Greece, Italy, Scandinavia and China.
As per tradition, each Friday the Principal gives out treats
to each student. The school holds a draw in which one staff
member and one classroom is selected for a weekly prize, and
everyone in the school receives a birthday cupcake.
The school newspaper is titled "The Spirit".
