Greetings from the Family and Friends of Elliot Lake Secondary
School!
E.L.S.S. is a busy composite school
with a wide array of curricular and co-curricular programs. Our goal
is to meet the needs of all of our students. Our school boasts
excellent academic results including above average literacy and
numeracy scores and diverse programs such as Technological
Education, Healthy Active Living, Leadership, Cooperative Education
(both full and half-day programs and construction), Business and the
Arts, all of which augment our solid academic programs.
It is next to impossible
for a student to “fall through the cracks” at ELSS. The Student
Success Program supports at-risk students through a wide variety of
initiatives and pathways, including Late School, Independent Study,
Resource, the Student Success Room, mentoring, case conferencing,
data walls, credit rescue, credit recovery, and flexible
timetabling. A Grade 8 credit course offered during the year, Grade
8 Days, and a Jump Start program in July all help our new students
in their transition to secondary school. All ELSS report cards
(three sets each semester) are personally delivered to the students’
homes and reviewed by the Student Success Team. There are also two
Parent Interview nights early in each semester, and numerous
parent/student/teacher meetings throughout the year.
Participation in the E.L.S.S.
community is encouraged and appreciated and is the reason
that it is such an exciting school to come to every day. Students
can join competitive intramural and interschool sports, the
award-winning Improv and Reach for the Top teams, the Band, and a
host of clubs, including games, art, writing, reading, hockey, golf,
World Issues and Environment, Students for Students, and many more.
First thing every morning, the Breakfast Club welcomes our students.
At 10:05 every day, every one in the school – staff, students, and
visitors – reads. Birthdays are celebrated with cupcakes, and treats
are given out to every student in the Principal’s office on Fridays.
Parental involvement in E.L.S.S.
is also encouraged and appreciated. We are fortunate to have a
vibrant Parent Council and we consider education to be a three-way
partnership among students, teachers, and parents. Parents are, of
course, welcome any time to ELSS. In fact, we celebrate our
students’ successes at monthly Recognition Assemblies and special
celebratory dinners for each grade throughout the year.
Our students are very fortunate
to have excellent support from the communities of Elliot Lake and
Serpent River First Nation that make many of our “extra” programs
possible.
We, the
Family and Friends of ELSS, extend a warm welcome to all! |
